Fire wardens play a critical role and require comprehensive training to ensure they can fulfil their duties effectively. Every business must always have trained fire wardens on duty at all times. Their job is to identify and control fire risks to keep employees, customers, and the premises safe. Fire warden training equips them with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to do this and facilitate safe evacuations.
Trained fire wardens in the workplace is a legal obligation
The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 requires that all ‘responsible persons’ (business owner, landlord etc.) carry out a fire risk assessment, identify potential fire hazards, and implement appropriate measures to minimise the risk of fire.
These important fire safety tasks are then often undertaken by a fire warden. The penalties for not complying with the order can be severe, costing thousands in fines and can even result in a prison sentence.
What does fire warden training include?
Fire warden training ensures individuals have a detailed knowledge of their building’s fire safety strategy. They must be able to identify and remove hazards and facilitate the test and inspection of fire assets such as the fire alarm, fire extinguishers, fire doors and emergency lighting. Fire wardens are also responsible for keeping records and reporting observations.
In the event of an emergency, fire wardens need to take appropriate and effective action such as raising the alarm, evacuating staff and customers, and tackling the fire if it is safe to do.
These skills, and more, can only be learnt through detailed fire warden training. Find out more about Benfield Fire Safety’s fire warden training.
Find a qualified fire safety trainer
All Benfield Fire Safety’s trainers are ex-fire personnel with more than 30 years’ experience of dealing with fire prevention and safety. The value of face-to-face training should not be underestimated as a means of ensuring individuals have the right knowledge and skills to be an effective fire warden.
Benfield Fire Safety’s fire warden training includes a walk round of the building/s to familiarise your staff with your fire assets and the importance of recorded test and inspections required by fire safety regulations.
Hands-on fire safety training
Fire wardens need advanced training and must be able to use fire extinguishers correctly. This is a practical skill and having the confidence to do it in the event of a fire, reduces unnecessary risk.
Benfield Fire Safety has invested extensively in state-of-the-art training equipment. Our fire training simulations are carried out with digital LED fire extinguishers, smoke goggles and other technology to create a realistic environment with no risk.
We also provide fire extinguisher training outdoors with an instructor controlled gas rig. Under strict guidance of our ex-fire officer trainers, individuals tackle a fire using different fire extinguishers types and a fire blanket.
In summary:
Fire warden training is essential to ensure your legal obligations are fulfilled as a ‘Responsible Person’. Fire is a significant risk to your employees and business. Don’t leave it to chance or think – it won’t happen to me. Make sure you have high-quality fire warden training in place so that your staff have the practical skills and understanding to prevent and deal with a fire on your premises.
