Fire extinguishers are often the first line of defence in the event of a fire. We believe everyone should be confident and competent to extinguish a fire, and this only comes with experience. If your fire awareness training from another provider did not include hands-on practice with fire extinguishers, this course is for you.
The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 mandates that fire extinguishers are required in all buildings. The most common types of fire extinguisher are water, CO2, foam, dry powder and wet chemical extinguishers. The different types are effective against certain classes of fire, for example, water fire extinguishers are good for tackling fires involving burning paper, wood and soft furnishings (Class A fires). There is no one extinguisher type which works on all classes of fire. The fire risks to your premises identified in your fire risk assessment determine which types of fire extinguisher you require. You will also need to make sure that you have the right size and weight of fire extinguisher.
Fire extinguishers should be properly installed by a professional, and tested, maintained and serviced annually. This will prolong the life of the equipment, keeping your business safe from fire and saving you money.
