Evacuation Drills
in-person, at your workplace
As a business owner, it’s crucial to understand your legal obligations under UK Fire Safety Regulations.
One of these requirements is to conduct regular Fire Evacuation Drills to stress test your Fire Emergency Evacuation Plan (FEEP). This obligation comes under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 to keep people safe within the premises and regular, documented and evaluated fire evacuation drills form an important part of this requirement.

Why should my business carry out Fire Drills?
Drills assist you in evaluating the effectiveness of your procedures and help to identify opportunities for improvement, allowing you to revise procedures where necessary and to identify gaps in staff training.
This is an opportunity for staff to familiarise themselves with the fire panel, its use and its functionality. It also enables staff to understand what the fire panel is telling them.
All of these measures help to make your systems and your staff better prepared should there be a real fire on your premises and/or if you are audited by enforcement authorities.
Fire drills allow staff to be familiar with your organisation’s emergency procedures and allow them to practice appropriate actions and responses.
A properly documented fire drill will assist you in evidencing your ongoing actions toward compliance.
How often should an Evacuation Drill be carried out?
It is recommended to carry out a drill at least annually, but ideally at six monthly intervals. However, the responsibility is upon the business owner to set the frequency of drills in consideration of their business’s risk factors such as the business type, the activity and facilities within the building, staffing levels (overall shift patterns), staff turnover and how well your last drill went. Some businesses should therefore conduct drills more frequently. All staff should take part in drills (which may be another reason to carry out more than one per year).
